The diagnostic electrical biochip (EBC) is based on interdigitated gold ultramicroelectrode arrays (IDA) manufactured in silicon technology by eBiochip Systems (Itzehoe, Germany; www.ebiochip.com). Two detection formats are possible. The first one is the array-based biochip with multiple electrode positions where the capture molecules are immobilized directly onto the electrode surface (Fig. 2). The second format uses paramagnetic beads as a solid support and carrier for the capture molecules that are either immobilized prior to or after the analyte capture step (Fig. 3).
